Bird and Belle's Adventures in Marriage

Weeki Wachee, Fla.

I have very fond memories of my aunts, grandmother and family visiting the mermaids at Weeki Wachee Springs Park. Any trip through my childhood would not be complete without stopping at this kitschy tourist trap. I was sad to see that the park actually consisted of very little these days – a couple mermaid cutouts for photos, some pretty plants, a few snack stands and some peacocks. Regardless, we had fun wandering the grounds, visiting the peacocks and then piled into the underwater theater with about a zillion excited children and weary parents for Weeki Wachee’s rendition of The Little Mermaid. Bird shook his head as we left the park, muttering that he had never in his life seen something quite so bizarre. I welcomed him to Florida – my home state.

The live mermaid show! Bird's life is now complete 🙂

I think this is my new favorite photo of Bird ever. He makes a dapper merman - especially in his "travel" hat.

Peacock! The best part of the stop!

Female peacock.

Mermaid and Merman.

Belle still fits in the dolphin! (Bird had a much harder time).

  1. I am loving your prolific posts! I am beginning to understand why so many people flock to Fla. Had a hearty laugh at the merman, not to mention Poseidon and his Belle!

    • Sally, this merman photo is just the best photo of Mr. Husband ever! And yes, Florida is a wonderful and amazing place that I miss so much! You and Pete should take and R&R vacation there this summer while we hold down the for in AZ for you!

  2. I have vague memories of Uncle M taking us to see the alligators in the marshy swamps of Florida. Could this have been the place?

    Bird oddly looks pretty natural as a merman! He is certainly the man for you..Florida Belle.

    Peacock = Another potential tattoo?

    Did you know Nanny always said she was a mermaid in her past life?

    I am loving this travelogue but am with your Mom! I miss FLORIDA!!!

    • Faith! I had forgotten about Nanny saying that but now that you mention it I can’t get it out of my brain! I miss Florida, too. We need more Florida in our lives.

  3. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the pictures! Can you email those to me so dad can print them? So, not so much stuff to do at Weeki Wachee anymore? No more boat ride? No more birds of prey show? No more swans lurking in the middle of a path just daring you to try to pass? Too bad. It is definitely kitschy but a fun place for little kids to see mermaids. I’m missing Florida again.
